Makeup Manual
Foreword
The first edition of the Kryolan Theater Makeup Primer was conceived as a manual to accompany the Kryolan Makeup Course Slide Series. However, because of the wide-ranging themes in makeup application which were covered in the Manual, we found that many experts in the field had expressed an interest in the Manual itself. Since that time there have been subsequent editions, this being the fourth. Originally formulated as a primer for experts in the field, this compact book should give basic information, and inspiration from and to the field of professional theatrical makeup application. In order to serve this purpose, the Makeup Primer was further expanded and updated. More specifically, the three dimensional makeup effects were rephotographed, mold and mask making techniques were more thoroughly covered, and the chapter on bald pates was more effectively presented. Additional photographs of related specialized techniques in the field as well as the reproduction of example designs will hopefully help to convey more thorough insight into the many-sided work of the professional makeup artist. Examples of body makeup have been included for the first time, to take into account the developments in this area of makeup artistry. The work of a makeup artist is indeed an art in which physical deftness, knowledge of materials, understanding of basic principles, and creativity are all required. We hope that this new version of the Makeup Manual can be a helpful accompaniment to you in your work.
